Our story
Why I Started The AI Social
Hi, I’m Laura, the Founding Member of The AI Social.
Although I started the first chapter, this community belongs to its members. It will grow through the ideas, interests and experiences of the women who join it.
In my 40s, I decided to study artificial intelligence because it felt like a significant change in society and I wanted to understand it properly. As I learned more, I became increasingly interested in how AI could be used responsibly and meaningfully. I also kept meeting brilliant women who were curious about it but felt it was not really for them.
These are some of the things I heard:
“There’s too much jargon. Too much hype. I wouldn’t know where to begin.”
“I just don’t like AI.”
I kept coming back to the same thought. Many women around the world still don’t have a relaxed and supportive community space where they can explore AI without feeling behind, out of place, or worried about asking a basic question.
That's why I started The AI Social. It is the informal, community-led space I felt was missing. Somewhere women can meet others, learn together and explore what AI could mean for work, creativity, business and everyday life.
Come along to an in person meet up by yourself or bring a friend. Bring your questions, including the ones you think might be silly.

About Me
I have spent more than 15 years working across digital marketing, product management and digital strategy.
In my 40s, I returned to university to study artificial intelligence because I wanted to understand how it was changing work, business and society. I completed an MSc in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Liverpool and continued my professional learning through the University of Oxford, becoming a Certified AI Professional, Certified AI Ethics Practitioner and Certified AI Auditor.
I am also a member of the Global Council for Responsible AI and its Isle of Man Country Chair. Through The AI Social, I am committed to making AI more ethical, responsible and accessible for all women.
Alongside my work with The AI Social, I freelance and contract with organisations, helping them plan and deliver AI projects and programmes and take a practical, responsible approach to adopting new technology. My work includes AI strategy, responsible AI and governance, business case development, organisational change and building AI capability.
